Through collaboration between Turks Abroad and Related Communities (Yurtdışı Türkler ve Akraba Topluluklar Başkanlığı/YTB), Council of Higher Education (Yükseköğretim Kurulu/YÖK), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and TRT World, and active participation by Turkish associations and organizations concerned with refugees and foreigners’ affairs and the ACU, a conference on “Higher Education for Students under International Protection” was organized. The conference aimed at shedding the light on higher education, difficulties suffered by students under international protection, especially Syrian students, as well as their success stories despite the war and asylum conditions.
Abdullah Eren, President of YTB, pointed to the graduate students’ important role in building their countries upon their return. Eren also indicated that students from 170 countries are receiving education under Turkish scholarships offered by YTB, and by support from the UNHCR in Turkey and the EU, scholarships are offered to students under international protection.
The UNHCR representative in Turkey, Katharina Lumpp, noted that Turkey is considered as a good example for other states to follow in terms of higher education for students under international protection.
